Hogeye Half Marathon: My pace at each mile.

Mostly walked/ran some 13.19 miles in 3:10:48.

Mile 1 and 2: 14:43 and 14:25  I walked the first 2 with a mother-son pair. It was awkward not being able to go fast. It was awkward trying to keep a conversation going with someone I didn't know, especially since I am not much of a talker.

Mile 3: 12:30
I took off. It was exhilarating!

Mile 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9: 13:41, 13:10, 13:39, 13:48, 13:20, 13:57.
I ran/walked Mile 4 to 9. I used cones, trees, mailboxes, driveways, lampposts as reference points. I had to remind myself not to gun it at this point in time. It is still too soon in the race to start having knee pains.  So, I would actually stop and walk before my knee could complain. I think I did a good job. I am actually pretty stoked about this run/walk pace.  Majority of these were walking paces. I didn't run a lot. And my pace was decent.  It was a goal to keep my pace under 15:00 min/mile.
Anyway, when my knee is well, I will actually try out running/walking a long run and see what it does to my pace.  I am looking forward to that day!

Mile 10: 15:20
I passed an aid station and asked for beer.  It was a smart move because the water and Gatorade were kinda warm but the beer stayed cool and spritzy. And I was HUNGRY!
My knee started hurting after the beer and I pretty much quit running at this point. I might have hobbled to a tree or so though.

Mile 11, 12, 13, 0.1: 16:17, 16:34, 16:35 16:57
At about mile 13, I was passed by the first lady coming in from her marathon, who would be 2nd overall runner. She was fast. And she made it looked seamless and easy.  If my knees were giving me trouble, I probably would just followed her and paparazzied her! Haha.

  1. I really like the run/walk method. It made my long runs faster even though I was walking! First it's a mental thing, you can always finish 1 mile and then it actually helps to feel stronger longer. Great race!!

  5. That's so cool that you had a mid-race beer. My friend told me that one year when he did the Walt Disney World marathon they were handing out beer in Germany at Epcot. I don't like beer - but I think I would have to grab just to say I did!

Sounds like you did awesome and finished pain free. That is great!!

  10. Good job on this half marathon. I agree that a run/walk plan can really work for many people.

Keep at it and I suggest you get the knee evaluated if you're not sure what's causing the pain. If could be a very simple thing to address. Sometimes there's a muscle imbalance in your sore side that aggravates the knee pain. Also, I highly recommend getting a foam roller for working out the tightness and issues with your body. It really can make a difference.
